Reasons to Use iSCSI
If you are a smaller enterprise consolidating storage for the first time, look to iSCSI to achieve low-cost consolidation goals.
- iSCSI SANs are the preferred choice for small enterprises. This preference is due to the lower cost of iSCSI SANs and their capacity to leverage existing Ethernet expertise.
- Since 2007, storage vendors have achieved considerable traction selling iSCSI to SMEs that were consolidating and virtualizing their x86 server infrastructure.
- In past studies, Info-Tech found that iSCSI storage provides good enough performance for all but the most demanding storage uses (specifically database-driven apps that drive large amounts of small read/write transactions).
- iSCSI storage vendors also boosted the performance of their solutions with the inclusion of higher speed and more reliable Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives. (Early iSCSI-only solutions used only cheaper but slower and less reliable Serial ATA or SATA drives.)
| Important Note: While clustered iSCSI has benefited from SME interest, so has Enterprise NAS and products from storage innovators that offer iSCSI ports on their solutions. |
