10 Gigabit Ethernet: Storage Network Convergence
10 Gigabit Ethernet provides one network infrastructure for FC and iSCSI storage traffic.
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet greatly increases the bandwidth available for network traffic (including storage traffic). This means more bandwidth for iSCSI (10x what’s available via Gigabit Ethernet).
- iSCSI over Ethernet has traditionally taken a back seat to Fibre Channel in terms of network bandwidth. Where iSCSI typically traverses a Gigabit Ethernet network, various iterations of FC have had 2, 4, and 8 gigabit speeds.
- The bandwidth increases, but it also means that a range of network traffic – storage read/write blocks, files, voice, video, etc. – can share a single network. This includes FC storage traffic using FC over Ethernet (FCoE).
