I agree with Marcus on taking the middle road.  You have to be able to understand the system from the management perspective and then communicate that perspective to the designer.

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

We use system engineering approaches to break down the whole process down and make completing our goals simple. Plus using this method can help when working with others becuase they will be able to take your points and work with them.

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

Not only do you have to understand the system from the managements perspective but you also have to understand how to the use the system engineering system to break it down into a process that everyone can benefit from

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

The system engineering approach allows you to systematically dissect a large project. This is useful to security architects when visualizing a large company’s structure

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

Excellent post Mr Green I agree. Looking at the whole in smaller pieces does help you understand the customers’ needs.

Bryan-

When designing anything I feel that you have to build toward what the customer wants and if they can use it...

If they can't use what you built, then what good was your design and implementation?

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

When designing a system for a customer according to his specification, System Engineering plays a very important role making it secure, and ensures that the customer's needs are satisfied throughout a system's entire life cycle.

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

A systems engineering methodology should be followed in security architecture as it lays out a formalized approach to designing a system. This approach complements the SABSA model as it emphasizes identification of the problem, creation of a design/designs, and production of the system using the best design possible. The systems engineering approach also builds in governance of an architecture by requiring multiple draft revisions of a design, along with comparative analysis to ensure the best method was chosen.

After going through all the post, i agree the use of System Engineering approach to security Architecture as it assist and support in decision making, policy making and  planning smoothly.

Jevone always makes it so difficult to add something extra to the week's question as he makes these spot on replies with the first post. So it goes without saying that I agree with his assertion that the systems engineering approach makes difficult problems easier by breaking them down into simpler, easier to manage problems.

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

I think that a systems engineering approach would be quite useful in a security architecture because this would provide a more detailed and as the professor says "down in the ditches" approach to the architecture. This could provide aid in more accuratly pricing what things could cost.

I have to agree with Mr. Kuntz on this, Jevonne you must wait a few days or at least dumb down your approach But needless to say i agree with your assertion as to what makes system engineering important.

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

System Engineering is "a rational approach to decision making related to the solution of complex problems in engineering planning, design and operation" as read in our textbook.  The book also continues to state that systems engineering is "the most relevant approach to designing digital business systems".  Through things like top-down decomposition, black-box and logical flow analysis the Security Professional is able to take a very complex job and make it very simple.  With the structured framework provided by this method a task is able to be broken down, in doing so the ultimate goal seems more attainable(simpler).

Re: The Systems Engineering Approach

JeVone, very well said my friend.  I didn't read your post before I posted mine but I pretty much was getting at the same thing you said, but I think you did a much better job at expressing the point in an easy to understand fashion.
