Information technology does not deliver business value – business people (sales, production, operations) do that. Information technology either allows those folks to do their jobs faster or changes their work in new and innovative ways. At least it had better, otherwise we end up with yet another project that makes everyone's lives miserable for a few years.
In other words, a “Vision Statement” is just a very short, very concise way of saying “How is this going to make your job easier, Mr. User?”
The attached tool helps you build a vision statement. After reading through the vision statement templates, test them out. The best way to test them is to try each vision statement out, informally, with people in your company but outside of IT. It's everyone else you need to bring on board to make this work.
