YouTube Usernames Safe After Google and Viacom Reach Privacy Deal

Posted by Ainsley Jones Jul 15, 2008 9:19:01 AM

Earlier this month, a U.S. District Court ordered Google to turn over YouTube user data to Viacom. The ruling sparked off privacy complaints by Google and advocacy groups.

Yesterday, Google announced that it reached an agreement with Viacom to anonymize the data, reports News.com. While the accordance is harmonious for users, the deal is not without conflict. Google is refusing to hand Viacom information on which videos YouTube employees have watched and/or uploaded to the site.

According to Reuters, Google has reached a similar deal with attorneys concerning a class action lawsuit led by the Football Association of England. Google will make a version of its database available without identifying specific users.
