Will Google Lose Focus on Search in 2008?

Posted by Susan Hall Dec 31, 2007 1:05:31 PM

As Google's share of the market continues to grow,  The New York Times ponders the implications should it eventually control 80 percent to 90 percent of search.

According to research company Hitwise, Google's share reached 65.1 percent in November, more than triple the share of its  nearest rival, Yahoo, and more than nine times that of third-place finisher Microsoft.

But not every analyst thinks Google's hot growth will continue unabated.  Standard & Poors analyst Scott Kessler cited three reasons he thinks its growth will slow in 2008: a maturing search market, improvements made by its rivals, and the possibility that Google might get distracted by its myriad non-search projects.

Those projects include not only the upcoming spectrum auction,  its phone platform and advertising, but also alternative energy, laying undersea communications cable and even offering a moon rover competition.
