The Longest Goodbye

Could Bill Gates outdo Cher?

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer calls Gates' farewell from daily duties at Microsoft"America's longest corporate farewell tour," with a special report on everything Gates. It looks back, it looks forward, it looks at who's left running the software company.

Columnist Bill Virgin says Gates' transition away from the company remains only half done. Gates, after all, will remain as chairman and the company's largest investor, keep an office at Microsoft, and work on specific Microsoft projects. But Virgin notes, many departing execs have trouble truly doing a hand-off. Virgin writes:

If Gates is just as successful in managing the second half, by seamlessly handing off the company to the next generation of leaders, that will be as noteworthy an achievement as building the company in the first place.
