Stakes High As Adobe Releases Creative Suite 5

Posted by Susan Hall Apr 12, 2010 5:03:00 PM

Adobe has released Creative Suite 5, its collection of design applications that form the core of work for print and Web designers and videographers.

Macworld quotes John Loiacono, Adobe's  senior vice president, putting it mildly as saying:

As a technology that generates more than half of the company’s revenue,  this is an incredibly important release for us.

Macworld has a wealth of information on the individual applications, while CNET News' Lori Grunin has some gripes about things that haven't been fixed.

The company's under the gun to do well with this release after Apple's Steve Jobs called Flash "too slow" to work on its products, favoring HTML5 instead. A Bloomberg story on BusinessWeek quotes Andrea “Andy” Cunningham, president of CXO Communication, who helped create Apple’s Macintosh public relations  campaign in 1984, saying:

Adobe can’t be complacent against someone as charismatic as Steve Jobs. They need to define Flash as the Kleenex of video media. The battle is theirs to lose, and if they do, it will be a real shame.

Meanwhile, ReadWriteWeb writes of a tool in the suite that will allow easy  import of Flash animations into HTML5 Canvas code once IE9 launches. Meanwhile, Google plans for a tablet computer using Flash could be Adobe's salvation, according to The New York Times.
