SharePoint to Get App Marketplace

Posted by Susan Hall Nov 6, 2009 9:58:38 AM

Microsoft plans to offer a marketplace for third-party applications within SharePoint 2010, reports ReadWriteWeb. No date has been set for its launch.

Microsoft's Christian Finn said  the marketplace will evolve out of The Gallery, a resource within SharePoint 2010 where people can find templates. From the SharePoint interface, they will be able to go out onto the Web to find other applications and add-ons.

Separately, the company announced it will add SharePoint Online services to its Live@edu program, which offers free e-mail and other collaboration tools to schools and universities, acording to a Network World story in the The San Francisco Chronicle. That's set to happen in the second half of next year.
