Safari, Vista Got Pwnd

Posted by Kara Reeder Apr 1, 2008 10:29:25 AM

A three-day hacker contest resulted in Apple's Mac OS X and Microsoft's Windows Vista succumbing to hackers.

TechNewsWorld reports that the 2008 "Pwn to Own" contest, sponsored by security firm TippingPoint, challenged hackers to break into three machines: a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.5.2, a Fujitsu U810 notebook running Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, and a Sony Vaio running Ubuntu 7.10.

Of the three, the Ubuntu laptop was the only one left standing. Independent Security Evaluators' Charlie Miller took first place and $10,000 for taking advantage of an exploit in Safari. Security Objectives' Shane Macaulay and Derek Callaway bagged $5,000 after cracking Vista with a critical bug in Adobe Systems Inc.'s Flash Player, according to Computerworld.

All winners were required to sign a nondisclosure agreement, reports Ars Technica. However, Macaulay has put the laptop he broke into up for bid on eBay, and the exploitation may still be present. The laptop went up for bid just hours before April 1. A bit of a coincidence?
