Rumor Site Think Secret Closing to Settle Suit with Apple

Posted by Susan Hall Dec 20, 2007 5:15:54 PM

The independent news and rumor site on Apple products, Think Secret, will be shuttered in a settlement of a long-running lawsuit filed by the company, reports the Los Angeles Times.

According to Ars Technica, Think Secret successfully predicted the introduction of the Mac mini as well as iWork in 2005. Apple sued the site, run by Harvard undergrad Nick Ciarelli, who started the site when he was 13. The suit alleged the stories gave away company secrets and tried to force Ciarelli to name his sources. The case became one of several challenging the distinction between bloggers and journalists.

On his Web site, Ciarelli said Apple had agreed to drop the suit and to stop pressing for the names of his sources if he would shutter the site. Ciarelli said he was ready to move on. His lawyer, reports a Computerworld story, was calling it a victory for Internet journalists.
