Outage at Google App Engine

Posted by Susan Hall Jun 18, 2008 10:09:47 AM

It was the stuff of nightmares, at least in the world of hosted services.

Google's application-hosting service went down for about 2 1/2 hours Tuesday, then again later in the day, according to InfoWorld.

A company forum post quoted by News.com described the problem this way:

This outage was the result of a bug in our datastore servers and was triggered by a particular class of queries. We have isolated the bug and we're currently working on a fix. Going forward, we're also working to further isolate queries so that in the future a bug like this won't affect the stability of the system as a whole

The service, Google App Engine, lets developers host their Web applications for free.

InfoWorld quotes Phil Shih, an analyst with Tier 1 Research, saying that though developers couldn't access their applications, the outage probably had less of an impact than similar recent outages at Amazon's hosted services for businesses.
