MSNBC Buys Out Newsvine.com

Susan Hall

MSNBC announced the buyout of citizen journalism site Newsvine.com, the first acquisition in the 11-year-history of the joint venture between Microsoft and NBC News.

Terms of the all-cash transaction were not reported, according to MSNBC.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, MSNBC, which had 27.3 million Web visitors in August, will benefit from Newsvine.com's technological innovations and community features, while the social news site will gain from MSNBC's technological resources, advertising capabilities and marketing muscle.

Newsvine.com will continue to operate as a separate entity.
