Intel Makes Solar Cell Foray

Following the lead of both HP and IBM, Intel has entered into the solar power market.

 

The world's leading chipmaker announced it would spin off its photovoltaic division to form SpectraWatt Inc., reports OregonLive.com. According to BusinessGreen, the new venture already has $50 million in funding and will begin supplying photovoltaic cells for solar panel manufacturers in mid-2009.

 

This ZDNet article says that in addition to manufacturing and shipping cells, SpectraWatt will focus on developing them to be more efficient.
