Domain Names With .asia Opened to All

Susan Hall

Domain names ending with .asia are open to all comers after being restricted for several months to applications from governments and organizations, reports vnunet.com.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers approved adding the extension in December.

But while more than 30,000 applications have been filed for ".asia" domain names, roughly 330,000 had been filed after the same length of time when the ".eu" domain name was launched in 2006.

Times Online calls the launch of the new extension a flop, citing experts who worry that the names will go to criminals setting up malicious sites.
