BT Wants Video Providers to Help Pay for Bandwidth

Posted by Susan Hall Jun 11, 2009 1:32:52 PM

Hot on the heels of a Cisco report predicting Internet traffic growth will be all about video, BT Group in the UK has suggested that the big video providers such as YouTube and the BBC's iPlayer pay more of the cost of providing bandwidth, reports Bloomberg.

John Petter, managing director of BT Retail’s consumer business, is quoted as saying:

BT can’t give content providers a “completely free ride and continue to give customers the service they want at the price they expect.”

He said that since these content providers are developing “very profitable business models” using BT's network, they should contribute to the cost of providing it.

The BBC last week complained that BT was affecting the quality of the video site by cutting the speed of connections in the evenings. That complaint sounds like ones we've heard here in the United States.
