Applied Materials to Buy Semitool

Posted by Susan Hall Nov 17, 2009 9:28:38 AM

Applied Materials, which makes chip-making equipment, will pay $364 million for Semitool, to acquire capabilities in advanced packaging and its conversion to copper, reports MarketWatch.

Reuters quotes CEO Mike Splinter saying:

With this acquisition, Applied will help the world's leading chip makers create ever-smaller and more powerful devices.

Applied Materials last week announced its first quarterly profit in a year and restructuring, including job cuts, designed to cut costs by $450 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.
