AOL Finally Pulls Plug on CompuServe

Susan Hall

The original commercially successful online portal CompuServe has been shut down, reports TG Daily. It debuted in 1979 and offered electronic mail, technical support and moderated technical forums.

By 1991, it boasted of having a half-million users online at the same time. AOL bought the brand in 1997 and it fell into decline. Original users can continue their nine- and 10-digit addresses on a new e-mail system. As The Register put it:

Nothing says stay off my lawn like 76453.1032@compuserve.com.
