When Telecommuting Really Means Working Remotely

Posted by Susan Hall Apr 14, 2009 12:54:18 PM

Being a remote worker takes on a whole new meaning for Aliza Sherman, a blogger for Web Worker Daily, who writes from her home in Tok, Alaska. She writes about the difficulties with broadband for rural residents, but also the desire for company, such as in a coworking arrangement.

IT Business Edge's Ann All wrote about the concept of finding a space, be it at Starbucks or in a shared communal workspace, to ease the isolation of telecommuting, one of the major drawbacks of that lifestyle.

In Sherman's rural town, the options are indeed limited for finding a place for coworking and for finding that company, especially since she knows of only one other Web worker there, and a part-timer at that.

Darrell Etherington writes about finding one other person with whom you can share your workspace. I imagine it's a lot like finding the right college roommate: You want someone you can get along with, but at the same time, if you're having too much fun, you'll never get anything done.
