Zimbabwe Newspaper Attacked

Posted by Susan Hall May 12, 2008 2:55:17 PM

Zimbabwe's state-owned Herald newspaper had been offline since Saturday after being hacked, Reuters reported Monday afternoon, but it appeared to be back up later in the day.

A hacker who called himself "r4b00f" replaced headlines with the word "Gukurahundi," which refers to a campaign of atrocities the government has been accused of committing after independence. The newspaper is considered the official mouthpiece of President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party and has criticized the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, which won the country's disputed March 29 elections.

It's just another example of "hacktivism" -- more about issues than money -- a type of hacking that security researchers say is increasing.
