Webmasters Located Malware with Google's Help

Kara Reeder

InformationWeek reports that Google has has enabled an experimental feature in its Webmaster Tools to help owners of compromised Web sites find and remove hidden malware. The tool is available to webmasters who have registered their sites with the company.

The feature is called "Malware details" and provides a list of Web pages where Google found malware and samples of the malicious content. The tool can even identify actual malicious code.

However, Goolge offers this disclaimer:

Google's scanners may not be able to provide malware samples in all cases, and the malware samples may not be a complete list of all the malware on the page. More importantly, we advise against simply removing the examples that are displayed in Webmaster Tools. If the underlying vulnerability is not identified and patched, it is likely that the site will be compromised again.
