VA to Shell out $20 Million for Breach

Posted by Susan Hall Jan 28, 2009 11:24:57 AM

The Veterans Affairs Department has agreed to a $20 million settlement with veterans whose identities were compromised in the theft of a laptop loaded with Social Security numbers and other sensitive data, reports The Associated Press in a story in the Boston Globe.

Veterans who can show they were actually harmed by the breach, such as by emotional distress or costs of data monitoring, will be eligible for payments of $75 to $1,500. Any money left over will be donated to veterans' charities.

But we can only hope the bite out of the U.S. Treasury prompts VA administrators to continue to improve security.
