UK Agency Challenges Security of Internet Protocol

Posted by Susan Hall Aug 21, 2008 12:42:34 PM

A UK defense agency is calling into question the security of the TCP/IP protocol, the basic way computers communicate with outside networks, reports vnunet.com.

The Centre for Protection of the National Infrastructure reports:

While many textbooks and articles have created the myth that the Internet Protocols were designed for warfare environments, the top level goal for the DARPA Internet Program was the sharing of large service machines on the Arpanet. As a result, many protocol specifications focus only on the operational aspects of the protocols they specify and overlook their security implications.
It warns that even patched systems still might not be secure and the fixes might introduce interoperability problems.
