Teen Hacker Held Dutch iPhones for Ransom

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 5, 2009 10:52:26 AM

According to internetnews.com, a clever teenage hacker sent an unsolicited and unremovable message to Dutch iPhone users that have jailbroken their devices. The message states:

Your iPhone's been hacked because it's really insecure! Please visit doiop.com/iHacked and secure your phone right now!

Users were then directed to pay $4.95 to the hacker's PayPal account to get the step-by-step directions for securing their phones. The instructions tell the user to change the default root SSH password, which they often forget to change when they jailbreak the phone.

The teen hacker's PayPal account has since been suspended, and he has posted the instructions for free.

In related news, hacker George Hotz, also known as Geohot, has jailbroken Apple’s newest 3G and 3GS iPhones, reports The Money Times. Apple's response is that the licensee is not the "owner" of the iPhone software and cautions that modifying the OS could "cause serious problems in the operation" of the device, notes TG Daily.
