Survey Shows Health Care Security an Afterthought in U.S.

Posted by Kim Mays Oct 21, 2009 9:39:23 AM

According to a survey released by Ponemon Institute, more than half of U.S. hospitals do not take appropriate security steps to protect patient privacy, says SC Magazine.

Said Mike Spinny, senior privacy analyst with the Ponemon Institute:

This survey shows that security is not being given the attention it needs.

In that survey, nearly 80 percent of  respondents had experienced one or more incidents of stolen or lost electronic health care information in the previous year. Also, the IT health care professionals surveyed said senior management in their organizations does not view data security or privacy as a priority.
