Spam Volume at Pre-McColo Levels, Says Postini

Posted by Kara Reeder Mar 31, 2009 11:58:35 AM

According to Postini, spam volumes have increased to the levels prior to the shut down of hosting company McColo Corp.

CNET News reports that the overall spam volume during the first quarter was up an average of 1.2 percent per day with volumes now reaching pre-McColo shutdown levels. Spammers are using peer-to-peer technology and location-based spam to get around ISP shutdowns.

Immediately following the shutdown of McColo in November, spam levels across the globe dropped as much as 75 percent. Spammers were still struggling to get on their feet in January.

Adam Swidler, Postini product marketing manager, says,

"What the spammers have been using to rebuild is more technically advanced than what got taken out and is itself a more resilient technology. It’s unlikely we are going to see another event like McColo where taking out an ISP has that kind of dramatic impact on global spam volumes.”
