Scope of TJX Data Breach Revealed

Posted by Michael Lindenberger Mar 30, 2007 10:52:12 AM

Details about the data breach by U.S. retail giant TJX are out, and they aren't pretty. As many as 45.7 million customer records were stolen by intruders, according to a filing by the company this week.

Internetnews.com reports that the disclosure of the scope of the attack -- the largest of its kind -- came two months after the company, which owns T.J. Maxx and other retailers, announced its database of customer records had been breached.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the stolen records were credit card numbers. But an additional 455,000 people who had supplied personal data -- including driver's license numbers -- had also been compromised. The stolen data related to transactions that took place at stores in 2003 and 2004, according to the Trib.
