Oklahoma Department of Human Services Laptop Stolen

Posted by Kara Reeder Apr 27, 2009 10:27:52 AM

According to internetnews.com, a laptop containing the personal information of people receiving government assistance was stolen from the car of an employee of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. The laptop contained the names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and home addresses of clients using such programs as Medicaid and Child Care assistance and could affect nearly 1 million people. The department has notified people who might be affected, but says the risk of disclosure is low.

This breach could end up costing a pretty penny. A recent study commissioned by Intel found that a lost or stolen notebook can cost a company nearly $50,000 to replace.
