October National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Posted by Kara Reeder Oct 5, 2009 11:10:10 AM

According to FederalNewsRadio, President Barack Obama has named October National Cyber Security Awareness Month. The goal is to raise public awareness of the need for cyber security both at work and at home.

The U.S. Air Force notes that the National Cyber Security Alliance offers several tips to help users protect themselves:

  • Do not open unsolicited e-mails.
  • Keep Web browsers and operating systems up to date.
  • Back up important files at least once a month.
  • Make security software tools your first line of defense.
  • Make sure passwords are strong by using a combination of  numbers, capital and lowercase letters and special characters.

In addition, UC Santa Cruz also offers some tips on avoiding getting fooled by malicious tiny URLs and malicious links to fake videos. The tips are common sense: "If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
