Naive SMBs Think Size Matters in Security Attacks

Posted by Kara Reeder Jul 23, 2008 9:30:33 AM

"Does Size Matter?" a new report by McAfee, shows that SMBs are naive about security threats.

While nearly a third of companies said they had been attacked, 52 percent believed they were too small to be noticed by criminals, reports vnunet.com. McAfee VP Darrell Rodenbaugh points out that indeed size doesn't matter: For businesses of all sizes, security threats can lead to down time and lost sales, among other things.

The report indicated that time constraints are also impacting SMB security, according to PC Advisor. Forty-two percent of SMBs spend an hour or less on security management, and 43 percent stick with default settings on IT equipment.

SMBs have been living under this false sense of security for a while. Last year, IT BusinessEdge blogger Carl Weinschenk discussed several surveys that showed far too many SMBs have their heads buried in the cyber-sand.
