Missing Hard Drive Contains 1.5 Million Records

Posted by Kara Reeder Nov 20, 2009 11:29:40 AM

According to Computerworld, a hard drive with seven years' worth of personal information on about 1.5 million customers of Health Net of the Northeast Inc. has been reported missing -- six months after the fact.

The hard drive not only contained medical information, but also names, addresses and Social Security numbers of Health Net customers from Arizona, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. The missing device, which was not encrypted, went missing in May and was only just reported to the Connecticut state attorney general's office and the Department of Insurance.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal calls the data breach "incomprehensible" and shows a:

shocking disregard for patients' financial security, as well as loss of their highly sensitive and confidential personal health information.

The company says there have been no reports of misused data arising from the breach and has pledged to provide free credit monitoring for more than two years.
