Microsoft Joins Kerberos Consortium

Posted by Susan Hall Mar 31, 2008 1:43:10 PM

Microsoft has joined the security authentication and authorization group the MIT Kerberos Consortium as a founding sponsor and will take a seat on its Executive Board, joining members from Apple, Google and Sun Microsystems, reports MIT News.

An offshoot of MIT's Project Athena, Kerberos aims to offer consumer users the same single sign-on system that enterprises use, according to News.com blogger Dawn Kawamoto.

Microsoft uses the Kerberos network authentication protocol in Windows 2000, XP and Vista, and Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

Stephen Buckley, consortium executive director, said of the addition:

It is an important step forward towards our common ambition to create a universal authentication platform for the world's computer networks.
