MessageLabs Report Finds Malicious Web Sites, Botnets Dominating

Kara Reeder

According to a MessageLabs report, malicious Web sites and botnet activity dominated the cyber security landscape over the past 12 months, reports V3.co.uk.

The MessageLabs Intelligence 2009 Security Report shows that 10 major botnets control at least 5 million computers. Also, there has been a 7.6 percent rise in the average number of new malicious Web sites being blocked each day. Eighty percent of blocked domains are actually legitimate sites that have been compromised.

As far as spam goes, MessageLabs analyst Paul Wood says there is still "the huge potential for increases in the new year." This seems to agree with a recent report from Cisco. As we reported on our Network Security Edge site, Cisco expects spam to increase between 30 and 40 percent next year.
