McAfee to Volunteers: Yes, Click on That Spam!

Posted by Susan Hall Mar 31, 2008 12:48:13 PM

In a test of all spam, all the time, security company McAfee has selected 50 volunteers to click on all that spam, using Dell laptops with minimal anti-virus protection and a disposable e-mail address, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.

For the month of April, the volunteers will blog about their experiences at www.mcafeespamexperiment.com. The volunteers include five people in each of the 10 countries where McAfee does business. They represent a mix of ages, nationalities and computer experience. They will blog in their native language.

Afterward, McAfee will write a report on the experiment and the volunteers will get to keep the laptops.

While the company wants to find out how much spam is localized, it also wants to look at how it affects the average person.

Said Dave Marcus, a security researcher for McAfee's Avert Labs:

At the end of 30 days, we'll open a lot of people's eyes.

As RealTechNews notes, it will be interesting to see how many Nigerian/419-type scams the volunteers encounter.
