McAfee: Laid-Off Employees Represent Security Concern

Posted by Kara Reeder Jan 29, 2009 10:32:32 AM

According to a survey by McAfee, IT decision makers are concerned that laid-off employees will become a big security threat. Thirty-six percent were concerned about security problems caused by employees in financial stress, reports InfoWorld.

guardian.co.uk says the increased availability of USB devices makes data loss or theft easier. Such breaches are very expensive to companies. McAfee estimates that companies worldwide spent more than $1 trillion to repair damages from lost data.

The study, entitled "Unsecured Economies: Protecting Vital Information," also discusses geographical-related security issues. SC Magazine reports that developing countries such as China and India spent more money on security than Germany, UK, the U.S. and Japan. CNET News notes another interesting result:

"More than one quarter of the respondents said they avoid storing data in China, and 47 percent of the Chinese respondents said they believed the U.S. poses the biggest security threat to their data."
