Lawmakers Say China Hacks Their Computers

Posted by Susan Hall Jun 12, 2008 8:58:03 AM

Two U.S. Congressmen say computers in their offices, as well as one used by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, have been hacked by sources inside China. They believe it is the work of the Chinese government, reports Computerworld.

Rep. Frank Wolf, D-Va., a longtime critic of the Chinese government, said on the House floor Wednesday that four computers in his office were attacked in 2006. The computers contained data on dissidents and human rights activists across the world, he said. Rep. Christopher Smith, R-N.J., added that his computers used for a human rights subcommittee were infected in December 2006 and March 2007 with a virus traced to a Chinese IP address.

And The House Foreign Affairs Committee, shortly after their speech, disclosed one of its computers was also struck by a hacker working from China in 2006, reports Examiner.com.

The two lawmakers said they were advised not to say anything about the incidents, though they wouldn't name the person or agency who gave them this advice. According to Reuters, they called for congressional hearings on the attacks and to make sure lawmakers understand how to secure their systems.

The Chinese government has denied any involvement.
