Laptop Designed to 'Self-Destruct'

Posted by Susan Hall Feb 19, 2008 2:12:57 PM

A British company has developed an application using Wi-Fi and RFID that enables a laptop to "self-destruct" if it's taken outside its designated space, reports vnunet.com.

BackStopp software provides an electronic "heartbeat" so its location can be monitored. Outside the permitted zone, it can be triggered remotely to destroy the data on it or be set to do so automatically.

If the machine also has a webcam, it will be programmed to start shooting and send images through the network to help identify the thief, according to The Inquirer.
