IBM Report Says Security Researchers Helping Cybercrooks

Posted by Kara Reeder Jul 30, 2008 1:46:27 PM

A report from IBM's X-Force team says vulnerability researchers are helping attackers exploit code at record speeds, reports vnunet.com.

According to "X-Force 2008 Mid-Year Trend Statistics," 94 percent of all browser-related online exploits happen within 24 hours of the vulnerability being officially disclosed. The report suggests this is because it is typical for researchers to publish exploit code along with a security advisory.

InternetNews lists some other findings of the IBM report:

  • The most popular targets are browser plug-ins (78 percent of exploits) and the SQL server database (41 percent).
  • Russia is the biggest producer of spam, which differs from an earlier Sophos report.
  • Online financial institutions are the top target.

IBM says the report highlights the need for a new standard in vulnerability disclosure.
