'I See Security in Your Future,' Says Fujitsu

Posted by Kara Reeder May 19, 2008 8:52:10 AM

Fujitsu is taking security verification to a higher level than just fingerprint or iris scans. The company is introducing a new security system based on its PalmSecure palm-vein authentication technology.

PC World reports that the system compares an infrared image of a user's palm to vein patterns in a database of registered users as a means of verification. If one person is in the room, they can authenticate themselves and proceed through the door. However, if there is more than one person in the area, the door will not open until everyone has been authenticated or they walk away.

Fujitsu says PalmSecure can improve security by catching attempts to tailgate authorized employees into secure areas. It's already being used by more than 18,000 bank ATMs in Japan.

There is one drawback. The system uses a network of video cameras that discards color information to aid in data processing. Therefore, the flooring needs to have high contrast so that it is possible to identify actual individuals.
