Federal Efforts to Protect Data Found Lacking

Posted by Susan Hall Feb 26, 2008 1:50:58 PM

Many federal agencies still aren't doing enough to secure the information they collect and store, reports The Washington Post, citing a report by the Government Accountability Office.

Though ordered last May to shore up security and eliminate unnecessary use of Social Security numbers, the report found only two agencies had implemented all the recommendations for securing personal information issued by the Office of Management and Budget. Most of the nearly two dozen agencies studied had yet to fully implement the recommendations and two were found to have done nothing at all. The two agencies -- the Small Business Administration and the National Science Foundation -- say they have since complied with most or all of the recommendations, however.

Only the Treasury Department and the Department of Transportation had implemented all the recommendations.

Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., one of two senators who requested the study, said:

The findings released in this report are very troubling -- indicating that agency after agency has failed to make securing citizens' personal information a high priority.
