E-Voting Machine Maker's Web Site Hacked

Posted by Susan Hall Mar 21, 2008 11:33:15 AM

The Web site of a company whose e-voting machines have come under criticism in New Jersey has been hacked, reports InfoWorld. And News.com blogger Robert Vamosi found the Sequoia Voting Systems site frequently unavailable Thursday as he tried to write about it.

According to InfoWorld, Princeton University computer science professor Ed Felten noted the site's Ballot Blog page had been defaced. That page contained information from Sequoia about the Super Tuesday vote in New Jersey. Sequoia has removed the unauthorized content and beefed up security on the site.

County clerks in a half-dozen New Jersey counties noticed discrepancies in tallies of votes on the Sequoia machines in the Feb. 5 election and a group representing them, the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey, asked the state's attorney general to investigate, according to a PCWorld story in The Washington Post.

The group previously asked Felten, a critic of e-voting, to look into it, but that plan was abandoned after he received a letter from Sequoia threatening to sue him if he performed "unauthorized" analysis of the machines.
