E-Mail Death Threats a Hoax, FBI Says

Posted by Susan Hall Feb 26, 2008 3:15:25 PM

An e-mail scam has resurfaced in which an alleged assassin offers to let recipients live if they pay a fee, reports The Washington Post.

The death threats are a hoax, according to the FBI, reports InformationWeek. It says the sender asks for $20,000, though the Post story says the fee can vary. It's an attempt at plain-old extortion.

Snopes.com looks into the scam more in depth, but it would seem the poor spelling and grammar in the e-mails would make anyone even slightly experienced with spam suspicious.
