Data on 103,000 Virginia Students Misplaced

Kara Reeder

According to The Washington Post, a misplaced flash drive put the personal information of 103,000 former adult education students in Virginia at risk. However, officials do not believe the information, which included names, Social Security numbers and demographic information, has been misused.

A Virginia Education Department employee gave the unencrypted flash drive to a representative of Virginia Tech's Center for Assessment, Evaluation and Educational Programming for use in federally mandated research. A Virginia Tech spokesman said the university was "taking appropriate disciplinary actions" with the employee.
