China Beefing up Physical, Online Security for Olympics

Posted by Susan Hall Apr 25, 2008 11:56:07 AM

With Interpol warning of increased risks of physical attacks during this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing, China's worried about online attacks as well.

Organizers have been scrambling to put a positive face on the high-profile event for the world's cameras -- even going so far as trying to control the weather, as National Geographic notes.

Yet on Friday, the head of Interpol called the possibility of attacks on athletes "a real possibility," MSNBC reports.

And with the number of botnets, Trojans and malware at work on computer systems in China, InfoWorld notes there are a lot of ways online attacks could take place. In response, the government has created a special response team in Beijing to monitor systems for signs of attack and to respond accordingly.

The story quotes online security consultant Jim Fitzsimmons as saying:

It's very important for the government to make this successful. They are taking this issue very, very seriously.
