British Hacker Loses Extradition Appeal

Posted by Susan Hall Aug 28, 2008 10:44:02 AM

A British hacker accused of infiltrating nearly 100 U.S. military computers just after Sept. 11 has lost his fight against extradition before the European court of human rights, reports The Guardian.

British authorities have agreed to extradite him before, but Gary McKinnon kept pressing his case. He admits breaking into the computers, but has argued he had no malicious intent -- he was looking for evidence of aliens and other government coverups. U.S. authorities, however, didn't take kindly to the intrusions or the message he left behind: "Your security is crap."

Prosecutors have accused him of deleting files that disabled the Army's Washington network of more than 2,000 computers for 24 hours after the attacks on the Twin Towers, according to Bloomberg.

McKinnon has argued that U.S. authorities want to make an example of him and will mete out a harsher sentence than is justified.
