A Bot Hunting We Will Go ...

Posted by Kara Reeder Dec 1, 2008 11:55:28 AM

With the help of a grant from the U.S. Army Research Office, SRI International has developed software that can help users determine if their computers have been turned into bots.

BotHunter "is a free malware-detection application for Mac OS X, Linux/Unix and Windows that monitors network activity," reports InformationWeek. It looks for patterns in both incoming and outgoing data to determine if there is any malware activity.

Phillip Porras, lead developer of the BotHunter project, says the software has been downloaded nearly 35,000 times, with about 250 users reporting that their PCs have been turned into bots.
