AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are preparing to launch a mobile payments trial in Salt Lake City next year. The pilot program will see Salt Lake City's public transportation system accepting pay-by-wave from mobile phones. The program is also set to work for point-of-sale purchases at retailers in the area, reports The Register.
The carriers, part of the Isis coalition, are not alone in their pursuits. Apple, Google and RIM are also looking to implement near-field communication technology. The transition to NFC technology won't happen overnight, but carriers and manufacturers alike are on the path toward persuading consumers to leave their wallets at home.
