Smartphones Making Their Mark in Europe

Ainsley Jones

Research from IDC found that despite overall mobile phone shipments being down the final quarter of 2008, the smartphone market performed especially well in Western Europe. DIGITIMES reports that vendors shipped 9.3 units last quarter, a 25.9 percent increase from Q4 2007. Several new smartphones were launched during the quarter, which contributed to sales. However, sales for the entirety of 2008 were 36.1 percent higher than 2007.

It's a market that is showing few signs of slowing down. According to Rethink Wireless, LG has already logged more than a million pre-orders for its upcoming Arena handset in the first three weeks of its launch.
