RIM Unveils BlackBerry Development Tools

Posted by Ainsley Jones Nov 10, 2009 10:44:52 AM

At Research in Motion's BlackBerry Developer Conference, the company made a number of announcements that centered around improving the platform's appeal to developers. RIM will release new APIs to third-party developers, including BlackBerry's Push Service API,  that will be available within the first half of 2010. Three non-GPS location-based services as well as an improved payment and advertising service are also being added to the platform, according to Tech Fragments.

The move is part of RIM's strategy to stay ahead of the curve in smartphone development and to continue to compete in the increasingly saturated and competitive smartphone market, says NewsFactor Network. NPD Group analyst Ross Rubin notes:

RIM has done very well in terms of market share, but needs to evolve its broadband capabilities and user interface to keep competitive with more recent operating systems.
