Nokia Throws Open Doors to Symbian

Posted by Susan Hall Jun 24, 2008 11:15:38 AM

Facing competition from sexy rival smartphones, handset maker Nokia has agreed to pay $410 million for the remaining shares of Symbian and make its software open source, reports Reuters.

Nokia already owns 48 percent of the mobile operating system and pays more in royalties than it gets from the deal. But with the iPhone and Google's Android platform opened to developers andĀ  competition from BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and the LiMo Foundation, Nokia has plenty at stake, notes Silicon Valley Insider.

The Finnish company also announced it had formed the Symbian Foundation to further develop the software. Setting up a rivalry with Google's Open Handset Alliance, Nokia has partnered with service providers AT&T, NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone and chip makers Texas InstrumentsĀ  and STMicroelectronics.
